Why does the US spend more but offer lower quality healthcare compared to many other countries?
Unfortunately we cannot pinpoint the exact reason or even the four largest reasons for this conundrum but from the data that I saw I am confident that our unhealthy tendencies along with the reliance on pharmaceuticals are definitely hurting our quest for lower costs and higher quality care.
How do other countries utilize health information technology and how does it compare to the US?
As seen in the Accenture doctor surveys, the US is actually doing rather well when it comes to the adoption and utilization of health information technology. The difference in statistics can come down to many things such as incentives, technical infrastructure, and willingness of the medical professionals but so far the results are positive and they are improving.
What can the US learn from other countries to help make our country healthier?
The fact that the US is one of 3 countries out of the 35 countries in the OECD which does not make it a mandate to have health insurance of some kind. Each country has their differences in system but when it comes down to insurance, mostly everyone is covered. I think we can learn from that blueprint and figure out a way to provide quality healthcare which will in turn make us healthier as a country. We must also invest in healthier alternatives and exercise as our obesity rate is much higher than other countries.

Rolling back incentives and regulations for health providers to adopt health IT could be detrimental to the progress the US has made
Increasing the uninsured rate will go against all efforts to reduce costs
We should increase and encourage the adoption of health technology to become healthier as a population and lower obesity rates
It was interesting to learn that Canada has a similar healthcare as US, and that US is actually doing well in adoption and utilization of health information technology. It's just the question on whether they will make it more cost-efficient, and affordable for people who actually need the technology. So I would really want to learn more about ways that U.S. can adapt in making healthcare more cost-efficient and affordable. U.S. should also promote alternative treatments options, and healthier and affordable food options.

DeleteThe health care system for different countries are still relatively new to me. Although sometimes I come across reading article about it, but never understood how the system work in general. But after taking this class, I have some sense on how the system operates and functions. Now, for your presentation, a health care system comparison between the U.S. and Canada, at first I thought maybe Canada health care system and the cost is a little bit cheaper than the U.S., maybe... But from what you presented in class, it was not. It shocked me at first and made me wonder what causes it the price to go really high? does it have a controlled marketing emplaced? or does it function differently? But from what information you gathered and presented, I saw the U.S. in responding to patients and technologies are out performing better than Canada. I thought they were going to be the same, very updated and performed really good. However, it seems the U.S. is nominating in these areas when compare to other countries based on the information you provided. I think this a good sign and approach, but I think now we need is a good system to efficiently manage the healthcare cost. It would be great to see the system function in a well-thought system.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize that the U.S. was doing so well implementing IT into the health care system. . I suppose it would make sense given the amount of spending in health care, but this might suggest the U.S. can make advances in quality via this route that other countries are making not even using such a route. It makes sense given the culture, that a strong factor for such implementation is incentive-laden. Hopefully, any advances in the IT route don't stifle advances that may be in more traditional routes such as a primary physician centered systems.

It would be interesting to see, moving forward, if the U.S. becomes the world-leader in this aspect of health-care and, if so, they would market and try to use their product in the same it has been successful in U.S. (a mixed-model system) or they would adapt based on the country.

ReplyDeleteOf course, this is survey data from different time periods, so it is hard to make the claim that the US is better in IT. So many other factors come into play here, making it much more complex than presented. See the link I provided. Brent, maybe you can analyze these data for dental between Mexico and US?
